PLM SSC pushes for student regency

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Supreme Student Council (PLM SSC) announced its initiative to secure student representation in the university’s Board of Regents (BOR) during SSC President Jahna Par’s presidential address, July 22.

As part of its efforts to strengthen student participation in institutional decision-making, Par revealed that the council has begun taking steps to push the amendment of Republic Act (RA) 4196, the official charter establishing PLM, particularly its provision on the composition of the BOR.

On May 4, the PLM SSC began its call for student regency by disseminating a survey through Google Forms to gather the collective voice of the student body. This was followed by the release of informational materials on May 8, which aimed to provide students with a better understanding of student regency and its role in university governance.

Par revealed that the council is currently coordinating with lawmakers from both the House of Representatives (HOR) and Senate to pursue amendments to the university charter. At the same time, they are also preparing a position paper for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in support of the initiative.

Meanwhile, the PLM SSC has sought to have a dialogue with the BOR regarding the possibility of establishing a “spectator’s seat” to be held by the SSC President while awaiting the proposed charter amendments.

“Bagama’t hindi pa ito isang voting seat, naniniwala tayo na mahalagang magkaroon tayo ng kaalaman sa mga plano ng pinakamataas na antas ng pamamahala ng ating unibersidad,” Par stated.
