The PLM Department of Psychology held its third annual pinning and candle lighting ceremony with 77 fourth-year students at the City Garden Suites in Manila, Jan. 16.
With the theme “Into the Field of Minds: Touching Lives Beyond Theory,” the ceremony honors their years of hard work and commitment to the field of psychology as they venture into professional practice.
Marking the start of the event, College Dean Dr. Aileen S. Atienza warmly congratulated the students alongside their parents, wishing them continued success as aspiring psychology professionals who carry the values of a PLMayer.
University President Atty. Domingo “Sonny” Y. Reyes also graced the event and shared how the program is close to his heart, being a BS Psychology graduate himself. He shared his experiences as a counsellor, where the profession felt like “dealing with something unknown,” and how it has since undergone significant developments to gain the recognition it has now.
He also emphasized how psychology is a profession of encounters, guided by the three charisms of presence, accompaniment, and friendship, which sets it apart from other professions as it "journeys" into what is not easily seen. “Many not in the profession do not understand that, but now, it is our duty as graduates of this profession to tell them what [it] is all about.”
Following this, the PLM Department of Psychology’s multi-credentialed alumnus Dr. Francis B. Olaso, served as the ceremony’s guest speaker and began by paying homage to his professors present at the event. He expressed his gratitude, sharing how meaningful it was to deliver a speech before the mentors who shaped him into who he is today.
He highlighted that mental health patients are victims of both their circumstances and systemic neglect, stating, “Sa likod ng tahasang pagnanakaw ng gobyerno sa atin ng mga oportunidad para matuto at umunlad, deserve ng bawat Pilipino ang highest standards of healthcare.”
The two blocks of fourth-year students were then called on stage to receive their pins from their professors, marking their official transition from the classroom to professional practice.
The event concluded with the oath-taking and candle-lighting ceremony led by Kaxxe Ianne Carlos and Julianne Maxene Cipriano, Vice Presidents for Internal and External Affairs, respectively, of the PLM Psychological Society, followed by the closing remarks delivered by the department chairperson, Prof. Francis Jeremy Castillo.
