Students and faculties from different universities participated in the Manila Research Conference 2024, the first joint collaboration of the two Manila City government-owned higher education institutions at Justo Albert Auditorium (JAA), Oct. 10.
With the theme, “Innovative Collaboration for Sustainable Urban Futures: Integrating Disciplines to Address Manila’s Unique Challenges,” Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) President Atty. Domingo “Sonny” Reyes Jr. welcomed the participants by highlighting the relevance of research in the society.
“Let's not underestimate that research is not only an essential component in the existence of an academic institution but it is one of the most important groundwork in the exercise of our academic rights,” Pres. Reyes stated.
Universidad de Manila (UDM) President Dr. Ma. Felma Carlos-Tria also gave an inspirational message reminding that research is a vital tool for real world application in community benefit.
“Research is the backbone of progress in terms of innovation. It informs policy and empowers the community. It is essential for addressing the challenges we face," she said.
Dr. Carlos-Tria reiterated that this opportunity will benefit the city as PLM signed a memorandum of agreement with UDM to solidify the partnerships for opportunity and legacy in pursuit of knowledge.
Meanwhile, Dr. Benito “Ben” L. Teehankee, Professor of Management and Organization at De La Salle University, served as keynote speaker discussing how artificial intelligence (AI) helps innovation and diminish human flourishing.
“It [artificial intelligence] is not really intelligent in the way humans are but they are really fast, they can compute very fast and whatever you put into it they will predict what will come,” explaining the regression model behind AI.
Cluster parallel sessions and paper presentation for student category simultaneously happened in the afternoon at different venues: JAA for Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture; College of Medicine - Audio Visual Room for Health Sciences; Gusaling Katipunan - Bukod Tanging Bulwagan for Education, Arts, Social Science, Social Work, and Gusaling Emilio Ejercito - Katipunan Lounge for Business, Government and Law.
The second day of the conference is dedicated to paper presentations for faculty or professional category.
