PLM CN commences 54th Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony

The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila College of Nursing (PLM CN) commenced its 54th Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony for 194 second-year nursing students at the Justo Alberto Auditorium (JAA), July 18.

Conducted in two batches under the theme, “Honing Global Leaders in Care: Lighting the Path as Beacons of Hope, Hearts of Care, and Catalysts of Change,” the ceremonies were preceded by a Thanksgiving Mass, solemnly marking the occasion. 

Following this, PLM CN Dean Dr. Lynette G. Cleto formally welcomed the students as they entered the next stage of their nursing journey beyond academic training. 

University President Atty. Domingo “Sonny” Reyes Jr. then delivered his inspirational message reminding students to live by the three charisms that have guided him: Presence, Accompaniment, and Friendship. He emphasized the lasting impact that genuine kindness and compassion leave on others.

Morning guest speaker Dr. Rodolfo C. Borromeo underscored the importance of global nursing leadership and urged students to build both character and clinical competence while embracing opportunities for growth.

“As we pursue our individual North Stars, let us honor our calling not only as healthcare advocates but as future global leaders whose compassion transcends expectations and inspires others with trust,” he said. 

The afternoon session featured Dr. Maria Cecilia Punzalan, who shared her professional journey and encouraged students to embrace innovation while remaining grounded in the principles of humane nursing practice.

"While medical technology continues to advance, the healing power of genuine kindness, empathy, and respect remains at the very heart of nursing," she remarked.

The program continued with the presentation of the nursing caps, pins, lamps, and uniforms, symbolizing the profession’s values, responsibilities, and standards. 

This year’s Florence Nightingale lamp bearer, Maria Shemir P. Pariñas, a PLM CN alumna and Top 7 placer in the November 2025 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE), made the ceremonial entrance in both sessions, representing the enduring light of service and excellence in nursing.

The second-year students were then formally capped and pinned before singing their batch hymn, "Thanks to You," as a tribute to their parents while presenting them with white roses. 

Ms. Ma. Theresa Moderin, MAN, RN, and Dr. Jennifer P. Reyes led the recitation of the Nightingale Pledge during the morning and afternoon sessions respectively, reaffirming the students' commitment to ethical nursing practice.

The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Leizel B. Landi, RN, MAN, who encouraged students to continue learning, provide meaningful care, and make a difference in the communities they will serve.
