PLM College of Education (CED) honored the 263 practice teachers at the 2025 Annual Pinning Ceremony held in Adamson University Theater, Nov. 14.
PLM Cadet Teachers’ Organization (CTO) alongside the PLM CED Student Teaching Program (STeP) organized the pinning event. This year's theme, “Igniting the Flame of Excellence: From Passion to Profession,” reflected the significant milestone of the pre-service teachers’ transition from academic learning to the beginning of their teaching practicum.
The program started with a processional march of 4th year students from Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Special Needs Education, and Bachelor of Secondary Education (Major in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Sciences, and Social Studies).
This was followed by the opening remarks of Dean Conchita V. Yumol, who reminded the students to uphold the core values instilled by the university in facing the challenges that come with their teaching profession.
University President Atty. Domingo “Sonny” Reyes Jr. then delivered a motivational speech highlighting the current educational crisis.
“The Philippines also landed at the bottom half of the six ASEAN countries that participated in the 2019 Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics. Beyond this result, it is also alarming to know that 9 out of 10 students or children aged 9 years old are unable to read simple texts,” he said.
With this, he emphasized the need for the new generation of teachers to have a proactive response in overcoming the continuous decline of education.
“We are sorry to tell you that we, probably, the educators of the past, have not done our job. We failed in the education of the people who are now running this country. But you are different from us. You can make [it] better than us. Right now, you need to build and forge new alliances who are able to constitute the arrest of the declining quality of education,” he said.
After the speech, Student Teaching Program (STeP) Coordinator Prof. Maria Loraine J. Nieva spearheaded the Conferment of Internship, prompting the presentation of candidates for pinning.
PLM CTO President Mattheau I. Montinola led the Student Teachers’ Pledge.
Meanwhile, this year's guest speaker, Manila Vice Mayor Hon. Angela Lei “Chi” I. Atienza, highlighted the importance of making teaching an advocacy as well as the power of leading with love.
“Baunin niyo kung saan man kayo mapupunta ang isang puso ng isang misyonaryo. Make this an advocacy-teaching. Because you will be able to touch people’s lives. You would be able to help children, adults lead better lives,” she said.
The event concluded with Prof. Nieva's heartfelt closing speech, congratulating the students and expressing her gratitude to all the people who made the event possible.
