Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso announced on Tuesday, Aug. 19 his plan to transform the old Ospital ng Maynila building into a new Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) Academic Building for Health Sciences within two years.
During a meeting with the PLM Board of Regents, the mayor committed to repurpose the old facility into a health sciences campus, saying the project will ease space shortages and strengthen the university’s capacity to train more health professionals.
“We will continue producing more doctors, we will continue helping in nation-building,” he said, stressing that PLM’s ability to develop quality graduates would be hindered without adequate space.
The project involves retrofitting and redesigning the old hospital to house classrooms, laboratories, and technical facilities. Domagoso explained that while initial plans only called for a redesign, structural assessments showed retrofitting was necessary.
“Kailangan pala i-retrofit at i-redesign. We wanted to put laboratories, technical equipment that will be needed by our students,” he added. The city previously built a new 10-storey Ospital ng Maynila to replace the decades-old hospital.
The mayor thanked the PLM Board of Regents, city engineers, and architects for contributing ideas to the project’s design, noting that the completed PLM Academic Building for Health Sciences is expected to expand the university’s role in producing health professionals for Manila and the country.
