Petals in the Crowd
Written by Sophia Ashley Cajoles • Board by Shaquel Agumbay | 13 August 26
Walking down the street, all I saw was us.
A glimpse of us repeated in the crowd,
Then reality hit me like a bus,
We fell apart because I was too proud.
Was it when I bought roses instead of lilies,
Was it when I thought your dreams were silly?
Could it have been the words unspoken,
The problems I refused to share?
Was it when I pushed you away,
Even though you were my breath of fresh air?
Who would have thought we’d only last this long,
Then again, we’ve only spoken through the phone,
But being with you is where I belong,
Yet, my love, your heart I no longer own.
As I continue down the street,
There is a ruckus I meet.
A man down on his knee,
In his hand, a dozen lilies.
She says yes, the crowd goes wild,
Canons go off, big and loud,
The petals flow into the streets,
I’m reminded of a dream—that cannot be.
Your shadow lingers within my walls,
The thought of you still haunts me everyday.
Months pass, your voice is what my mind recalls,
It has yet to stop since you went away.
I wish I could turn back the wheels of time,
Back to when I was yours, and you were mine.
